008. How I discovered that more degrees will NOT make you rich
Feb 04, 2026Dear Wealth Builder,
Welcome to the first blog post of 2026! I am happy to see you here in the new year with all the power to make 2026 your best financial year so far.
Today we are going to smash a believe that many of us grew up with: The idea that having a degree (and the more degrees the better!) is the path to financial success.
Breaking this believe was personally a hard pill to swallow. Coming from a family that values education among the top priorities, I was encouraged to be one of the top students of my class everytime.
Having said that, I went above and beyond getting a bachelor in Economics in one of the most renowed universities in Mexico and later achieved an MBA (Master in Business Administration) in one of the top business schools in Germany.
These degrees helped me to enter the workforce and get positions in global companies as Audi, Santander Bank and Procter and Gamble.
During my corporate career I had two key observations that changed my mindset about degrees:
1. Even though I was surrounded by people with high degrees as master studies or even PhDs earning well, many of them either were drowning on debt or did not know what to do with their money so they put it either in the bank or in cash in their homes. Even people working in a bank, who I would have expected know very well about money, were piling up credit card debt spending more than they earned.
=> My observation was: there was zero correlation between having a post-graduate degree and building wealth.
2. During my career in Controlling, I have helped multiple companies save millions of dollars. Literally millions, which made me a valuable employee for the companies and made me feel "important" in my job. BUT! Looking backwards I clearly see that I went to college and later to the business school to learn how to make money for others, while I myself was getting as a compensation a minimum share of those millions the companies saved because of my work.
=> This second observation was shocking for me: I learned how to make money for others but I did not learn how to make and manage money for myself.
With this blog post I do not intend to disincentivize you to go to colleage or make a post-graduate study. But what I want you to see clearly is that IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BE RICH.
For you to be able to create wealth you need to learn a skill, disregarding how many degrees you have (or even when you have none). This skill is Personal Finance.
All about managing your money, learning how to invest, setting financial goals, create your money strategy, all these life changing knowledge you need to get to build wealth, no matter which degree you have.
This was a short blog post, but hopefully revealing to a new perspective that help you move towards your wealth building.
